You're killin' me here. You know that, right?

C.A.P 08-03-2009, 09:50 AM Good price on a decent clone ! Trigger blows but that can be addressed.
VulcanTrigger 08-06-2009, 05:24 PM I received my $65 Airhawk from Cabella's today. Here's my take:
The Good:
The stock is a good one, despite the dings and scratches (see below).
The gun seems to function
It seems powerful and already "broken in"
No dieseling
The Bad:
Despite being described as "Refurbished to like-new condition," the stock has small dings, scratches and some kind of adhesive on it in places (seems like epoxy). The spring and breach seal look old, but not damaged.
It's the old model without a scope stop
The outside bottom of the scope is scratched
The scope mounts are missing two screws and 1/2 of one of its clamps.
It feels like the connector between the beartrap lever and piston is hitting the spring during the cocking stroke.
Cabella's response to the dings, scratches, and missing parts is below:
We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Unfortunately, this air rifle is refurbished so there will be some dings and scratches on it. If you would like to return it back to us for a different item, you can certainly do so.
Since it was refurbished, we can not guarantee that all of the parts will be in tact. Again, you can return the merchandise back to us.
I think I'll keep it. The scope mounts are junk, but I was going to use the set that came with this gun, plus the set from the Blackhawk to get a reasonably solid mount. Since there is no scope stop, I think I'll just leave the scope off it entirely, since I've been enjoying the open-sighted Storm XT quite a bit.
My question is that the Storm XT and the new Ruger need names. They seem like brothers. Any suggestions?
Thanks,

How about BATMAN and ROBIN? :D :D :D
VulcanTrigger 08-07-2009, 05:13 AM Hmmmm. Batman and Robin. Isn't too bad. And when I shoot them with a friend, I can always say "Here - you get Robin."
Any other ideas?
Also, the Airhawk is a shooter, though a quirky one. It shoots very high. I had to put some rubber washers in the rear sight to push it down enough to get it sighted in. It's quiet, but seems to hit hard as far as I can tell from punching holes in pine boards and the like. Pellets completely explode on a metal spinner target - I can't find any lead fragments. It likes RWS Superdomes, just like the Blackhawk. I'm not good enough with open sights to stack pellets, but I can hit a 1 inch spinner at over 20 yards with pretty good consistency with the Superdomes.
Still not happy that Cabella's wouldn't even send me the three missing scope mount parts. I guess my expectations for good customer service from businesses are just too high. Except for Crosman, that is.

Speedturtle 08-07-2009, 07:27 AM Here's another one... Tom and Jerry. or... Bonnie and Clyde maybe? :D Or... Smith and Wesson? :thumb: Ahh! Here's a good one: Starsky and Hutch!
VulcanTrigger 08-07-2009, 09:09 AM I really like Starsky and Hutch!
I think those may just be the names. But which is which? Is the Ruger more a Starsky or a Hutch? The Storm?

I'd say make the Ruger your Starsky and your XT as your Hutch. Starsky is the more rough type (hard cop) while Hutch is the intellectual and reserved type.

super6 08-08-2009, 03:00 PM VT:
the way to deal with Cabelas is to send the entire gun back for a replacement. I think it costs about $7.50 out of pocket. From what I've gathered this batch from Cabelas is more hit and miss than refurbs from sportsmansguide which pop up periodically. Some have "R"s stamped on them meaning Umarex is doing these. I think this is the first batch of Ruger refurbs which means it took quite some time for Umarex to get enough returns to do this. Says a lot for the gun.
Sounds like your barrel got loose from someone and is bent up slightly. Check it with a straight edge. As far as a tune...a light hone job, a minimal amont of moly, and an RWS 34 piston seal from Umarex and you're set. A large Apex seal from Maccari is good but may need a little sizing. The 34 rear spring guide is a little longer and if cheap, can't hurt.
VulcanTrigger 08-08-2009, 03:57 PM super6,
Thanks. I had the same thought about the barrel, but was wondering what the "R" stamped in the stock was. I had thought that it might be for "Ruger," but it makes more sense for it to stand for "Refurbished." Since the barrel isn't too bent, sighting it in is within the range of the adjustments. I actually like that the rear sight is so low, as otherwise it would be constantly pushed down by the forearm during cocking.
Do you know if Umarex actually takes these guns apart and rebuild them on an assembly line? Do they bother to put new piston seals in them?
For $65 and a three-day wait, I'm satisfied with this gun and don't want to risk returning it only to spend $7.50 for a gun with different, possibly worse, "quirks".
Besides, I've already named it "Starsky," so it's like one of the family now.
Thanks for the lead!

P.S. I also bought a tin of Cabelas wadcutter pellets. They look identical to Crosman Premier Match, only with more dented skirts.
super6 08-09-2009, 05:54 PM Refurbs directly from Umarex always get stamped with Rs, so they don't have to warranty them. Selling them through a retailer would require they honor a warranty of some sort but it's best just to return the gun for another. I don't think Umarex does much of anything other than correct gross problems and maybe test fire the gun. I would guess based on four refurb RWS guns I'm familiar with plus posts in forums that refurbs directly from them are fine guns 90% of the time. Many are like new.
Just call Umarex to see what they have available. A 34 runs about $120 shipped and a 350 runs about $225. Glen Seiter x17 and Ryan at x71 are the main contacts. Anna at x29 is best for parts but may be able to check on their refurbs also. The main number is (479)646-4210. Any gun listed on their site is a potential refurb, not just the RWS/Dianas.
