View Full Version : Gamo 500
Splash 11-13-2008, 05:45 PM I've gotten to know this one pretty well, been in it enough.:( I spun up a new rear guide, added a top hat and did a few other things, but just couldn't get rid of the twang. I decided this morning I was going to open her up one more time. I got to checking the spring OD, the piston ID and found the problem.;) I spun up another guide, top hat and installed a different spring, with a smaller OD. Problem solved:thumb: she shoots sweet now and almost ready, for her new home. I'm gonna put on a few more coats of oil, on the stock then she's done.
Can't wait to shoot this one splash - been getting everything together for her. Thanks for all your hard work!
Splash 11-13-2008, 06:36 PM I think your gonna like it. Your Welcome and Thank You.
RCnMo 11-13-2008, 09:16 PM Hey Splash. Did you get that new Shopsmith yet? Goods and Bads? It looked like it had lots of gadgets and gizmos.:D
Splash 11-14-2008, 04:13 AM Not yet, should be here the 1st of next month.
Splash 11-14-2008, 06:36 AM I thought I would post a pic, so you could see what your rifle looks like, or did. I put the smaller spring in, as you can see the other one is to much for the gun, but that's what Gamo crammed in there.
Wow that is a pretty long spring. You think they did that to reduce velocity down to around the advertised fps for this gun?
Splash 11-14-2008, 07:01 AM Not sure why they put that spring in there. The ID is .530 and the OD was right against the piston, which is why I couldn't get the twang out. I haven't put it across the chrony yet, but seems to be shooting the same, with the smaller spring, just allot quieter and easier cocking.
Splash 11-14-2008, 08:40 AM I went ahead and put her across the chrony this morning. Advertised vel is 760fps, which I'm sure is with PBA's and not avg ammo. I shot 1, 10shot string and got 740.6Hi, 731.8Lo, with 7.9 CPHP. It's had less than 25 down the pipe, so the #'s should get more consistent, once the seal seats.
Cool! That's not bad at all and is around the range I was looking for anyway since I'll be mostly punching paper at around 15-25 yards. I'm gonna see if the wife gets interested in this one...
Splash 11-14-2008, 08:49 AM If she's like mine, she would prefer a CO2, or PCP. I think she'll like this one though, light cocking and smooth, trigger turned out pretty good to.
Splash 11-19-2008, 07:00 AM Well it seems as though I screwed this one up.:( I tried to shoot a few groups with it the other day and that's when the problem occurred. I was shooting at 12yrds, but the pellets were all going in the same hole. Yep I'm going to miss this one, very light, accurate, fun little gun. As soon as it warms up a bit, I'm going to see how it does at longer ranges. Then I'll pull the stock back off and buff in a few more coats of oil.
That's a real bummer splash - glad I could take this problem rifle off your hands. :p
Splash 11-19-2008, 07:22 AM Thanks Jon, Hopefully you will have better results than I did. It's been awhile since I've shot with irons, so that could be what's wrong.
