Did some tests today on pellet lube
Used .177 crosman wadcutters 7.9 gr. Ran one patch and 1 felt cleaning pellet thru before each test, after each lubed pellet test I fired 5 unlubed pellets after the patch and felt pellet to help remove any residual lube. fired 10 pellets per test.First and last test used unlubed pellets. For lube I used Marvel Mystery oil, WD - 40, Old English lemon oil (furniture polish). To lube the pellets I put ten pellets on a paper towel applied enough lube to cover all pellets then rolled the pellets in the towel to remove the excess lube.

untreated pellets - Ave. 449.5 fps, Hi 456.4 fps, Lo 443.0 fps
Marvel mystery oil- Ave. 452.8 fps, Hi 464.2 fps, Lo 445.9 fps
WD-40- Ave. 456.7 fps, Hi 464.8 fps, Lo 444.7 fps
Old English Lemon oil- Ave. 456.7 fps, Hi 466.8 fps, Lo 447.5 fps
untreated pellets- Ave, 452.3 fps, Hi 457.6 fps, Lo 442.3 fps

I dont see enough improvement to say that pellet lube improves pellet performance. I'm sure people with their "secret sause" dissagree, for what its worth these tests show a 7fps gain on 2 of the tests, WD- 40 and Lemon oil.

That was interesting reading!!

Here in the UK, we have a power limit of 12ftlbs:(, so we have to be careful of anything that increases the velocity of our Airguns, if they are running close to that legal limit.
(But on the plus side, we are allowed to use silencers/moderators, and they are freely available over the counter without any restriction on ownership or use!)

I have tried a few different commercially available Pellet lubes, and feel the best gain when using lubed pellets is that they make a multi-shot guns magazine much smoother to cycle.

If I use un-lubed pellets, I can tell as the bolt action doesn`t feel so slick and smooth as when using lubed up ammo.

It is for this reason only that I personally use a pellet lube. Do You guys have commercially produced pellet lubes in the US?? If so, what brands are available, and which do You feel are the best???

The reason I did the test was I read an article somewhere about the CO2 guys using furniture polish ( Lemon Pledge ) as a pellet lube. Thought it was interesting and wanted to see how a springer responded to lubed pellets.:thumb:

I've done some work to the B 3 since those tests, a relube of the leather seal with Neats foot oil and used only moly to lube the rest of the rifle brought Ave FPS up to 562 with RWS Super Hollow Point 6.9 gr After changing from the leather seal to a synthetic seal FPS came up to 649 fps ......

Nice gain from the leather seal to the synthetic seal! Almost 100 fps more! Not bad at all!

South Summit lists the same rifle, Industry Brand B 3-1 underlever at 560 fps, so the synthetic seal was a definite improvement:D
