Yesterday. I fired her a few times and things were okay. I opened her up and examined everything; no major deburring was needed. The quality of the Gamo parts are pretty nice in comparison to crosman's parts. I added a crosman tophat to the front since there wasn't one in the recon, made thrust washers for the front and rear, lubed it up good and started testing. It shot good, but there was still a twang that I couldn't get rid of. I decided to try a different spring this morning, one I pulled from a new crosman. It was a little smaller in diameter and had about an extra 1.5" to it. Turns out the crosman spring fit the recon's guide very snug. I reinstalled and no more twang. She shoots really well now. I'm happy with this one and I think the wife will like this one as well. She changed her mind about the pink digital camo - she now wants pink tigerstripes...

Congrats on the recon Jon. I noticed that the Crosman springs had a bit smaller diameter too. I couldn't slide one over my stock CFX's spring guide though. I ended up making one out of delrin when I put a JM spring in it. Send some groups when you get the chance.

Jon, That's interesting on the recon, I just ordered some lube etc to try and get rid of the twang on my son's Recon, I might do that too if the twang remains on his after I do a lube, clean up etc.
We like the way it shoots but that twang is something!
Yeah it was shooting good after the lube tune but the twang kept messing with me. Splash had mentioned that in the 500 he tuned for me the spring's OD was large enough to where it kept twanging no matter what. He swapped it out to one that had a smaller OD and it got rid of it.
I decided to give it a shot and it worked well. I don't have a chrony yet, but I did the point blank on a phone book out of box, after the lube tune and then after the spring swap to see if there were any differences. After the intial lube tune with the stock spring it penetrated just a hair less than stock. After the crosman spring was installed it penetrated about another 1/16".
I'm working on testing right now and will post some groups shortly...

The Quest spring is an easy, cheap fix that works quite well, for the people that want a better shooter, without having a full tune done.

i have found that adding spacers to tighten up the spring can help to quiet the twangs in a pinch.

Does the trigger block on the Recon only come out after you remove the housing pin/bolt?
It seems to be held in by something else even after removing the bolt, I know that's one thing that holds it in, that's evident by the tab coming off of the trigger block but it must be held in by something else as well.
I don't want to just start tugging on it without being sure.

after you remove the block bolt you need to remove the pin and the spring in order to get the trigger out.

ahhh, so i got there cart before the horse here
Thanks
Yep - and after the mainspring is removed the trigger housing may need a little fiddling with to get out. Mine was in there pretty tight to where I couldn't even slide the housing back with my hands. I used a small nylon gunsmith hammer and gently tapped it rear-ward, then worked the tabs out.

What,s the name of the book that teaches one to fix all air guns, love to get my paws on it. Any info ?
you want the trigger to fit tite in the groove.if you have to tap it down the slot even better.if it just kinda falls out after the locking bolt is removed its to loose.some trigger housing adjusting on the bottom is needed."pry it open a tad with a screwdriver"
the deal is...if it fits loose..especialy in the front..the trig housing will move some up there even with the bolt locked down.
causing inconsistant sear to piston lock up.
