i feel like messin with mine to see what can be done as far as gaining power.
one time after a tune i dry fired it and i noticed that there was enough compression without a pellet present to cushion the piston and to ignite the lube that was in there as well.
this leads me to believe there is some room to work in this area.
anyone been there before?

I haven't touched mine (yet). Are you planning on opening it up, or beveling it or something else?

i was thinking of opening it up a little at a time to see what happens.

Hey Craig, I think there's a thread either on the yellow or gta bout someone opening up the port and they came up with the most efficient size based on caliber. The power actually got worse after they opened it past a certain dia. I was thinking of beveling the inside of a port to try and give it a more laminar flow. You may try this if you can "thread" a dremel stone's shaft through the compression side of the port and if you have the flex shaft on your dremel, chuck it up from the outside and give it a pull while you run it. It would sort of work like porting an engine, I would think. I believe Mike Melick said that .167 was all the larger he would go on a .177 before it started losing efficiency. Don't quote me though. Let us know what you come up with.

can you verify that for me next time your at the gta, i don't go there anymore.
that would save me alot of time.
thanks.

Here's one article, I'll keep looking.

Don't forget the overal problem with the barrel and the pivot point, you need to make sure both sets of holes are lined up exactly, the one from the power plant and the barrel reciever it self. If they are not it could be costing you a power loose with only getting have of the air power, try it on a chrony and play with the adjustments first or you could be shooting a dead hourse.

There is a UK forum dealing with this in the tech forum. I think the site is airgunforum.com. I cut them loose since they wear their shorts too tight and had a bad attitude. Thought yanks were overbearing. Can you imagine those dick weeds...:D

Craig, I think you'll have better results, polishing the port and adding a slight taper. If you do open it up, be sure to stay smaller than the bore, larger and you'll risk blowing breech seals.

I agree. Cardew, the airgun guru, has written articles pertaining to porting and bigger isn't necessarily better on springers. I guess even a mirror smooth finish on the port isn't always better either.

i like the idea of interchangable ports.
Paul are you down?

Yeah I was talking with Mike on the phone about that today. I think that would make testing different sizes a lot easier...

i read the links that Ralph posted and it seems to me that the guy insn't giving up much info.
so i think setting up all my guns with interchangable ports would be a good thing.

damn craig, long time no see. I was offline for a few weeks and i came back to the gta and alot of people were MIA, no to mention Paul's post. Bullshit IMHO.
I did i slight chamfer on the tube side of my Quest and cleaned out the port with a small round diamond file then polished with a dremel. I dont think i opened it up much. I dont have a chrony :( but my Quest hits HARD
Itll put a soft lead round nose pell straight through 1/2" finished fresh plywood and put a nice dent in the wood on the other side.

Hi Gunz,
it's good to see you too.
thanks for the info, i'm still researching and planing my next move on this transfer port deal so i'll keep the goings on posted.
if i have to sacrifice a tube to figure this out then i will, but when i'm done we will know what is what.

if im reading all this right you guys wanna put a "header" on these guns?makes sense to me.:)
quick exhaust makes for more power...IF you dont burn the valves ( piston seal/breech seal).
personally i would take the port and polish trick first.rare a break barrel will lock up with the 2 holes perfect.
but you can port (funnel) the 2 to become "inline".
look here....if the 2 holes are off say .020...the air hits that .020 wall and starts a turbulence which fooks the hole air flow up.
its a restriction..a cluster fook.
take some time and find the wall and polish it to receive the full input from the power source and WALLA..a nice air flow is accomplished.
try this test...wax paper in the lock up..pop a lead thru it..take note of the ragged part of the hole in the paper.
ok the ragged edge is at 5 oclock..most likely thats where the wall is.elbow grease is needed on the wall.
port it.:)
