View Full Version : Made a spring guide out of Delrin

Ok guys I P/U some Delrin Rods and made a spring guide for a GAMO (not sure if its going in the Whisper or CFX) I still may have to trim it out as I install it. Here is the big question, what the hell good does it do compaired to the factory Guide. The E3650 spring fits on the guide like a glove with no slop, and slides in and out with ease. When I install it, besides getting rid of the spring twang, what should I expect it to do for performance.
I know one thing, I have got to get me a Lathe to make it easier to make my ideas work instead of chucking it up in a drill and doing it the hard way. Any Comments on weather a plastic guide works better then the metal one, just want to know what to expect from it. Thanks in advance for and imput you guys can give me. Brian Goodloff

I did exactly what you did , but when I had my new spring a e3650 there was a lot of play between the two. So I got some delrin rod put a screw in the end then chucked it up in a drill and did a lot of sanding. I think my rod was 5/8. I made the new one very tight. It took allot of the twang out, along with the proper lubes . I had asked a "fishy guy" to make parts for me but he told me no way. So I went about it my self. So all in all I think I made it better But one thing for sure I can say that I MADE IT and it works for me:thumb:

the custom guide not only gets rid of twang it also improves overall shot cycle and increases power.
twang is vibration, so eliminating that allows all of the springs energy to transfer to the movment of the pellet instead of waisting some energy creating the vibration.

i also like that a custom guide is solid, the stock guide is hollow.

I ran into the same problem with the same person, I did not take it personal, his teaching methods make you think and to figure out what you are doing, it is the only way to learn. I have asked him a question and he half answers it, leaving just enough to drive you nuts till you figure out easy the answer realy was. I for one like this style of teaching and learning, for I do the same thing, when asking a question, I know what the answer should be, but it is no fun if it is given to you right up front. And yes he and I have gone back and forth when I ask a question looking for a diffrent answer, and the one big question anyone can ask is why is it always done that way are there no other choices and if not why. A student that just sits back and absorbs like a sponge is not really learning, I love it when someone comes off the wall and asks the simple of all questions, WHY? I have found it tends to open up a close relationship of give and take.

So again I have to ask the question again, yest the twang is gone as a result of using the Delrin, but the bottom line is it worth the trouble of making the new guide, and does it actualy work and add even a 1% increase in performance, does it stop the spring from canting, and again give more power, or does it just smooth out the firing cycle which is just fine in it self. RWS is the only line that I know of that uses plastic as a spring guide as a standard part. I am still learning which makes me a student at age 57, and I am one of thouse people that will sit in the back of the class and always ask the question, why does it have to be done that way, instead of trying it this way. Which I have found as I stated opens a 2 way conversation insted of just a one way method of instruction, and everyone learns..
I think I am going to install this guide in my Whisper first to see what she will do after. Will let you folks know what I find out.
Then I am going to try my new Dremel with some black flat stock .250 inch to see what it can do for another bart of the firing cycle and how it works. Thanks for the information folks.

I am also looking for a working low price small bench Lathe. If anyone knows of anyone who is looking to pass one on at a fair price, just a simple little unit please let me know. Working with this Delrin, I am running out of ways to work with it and getting it right, then I can help others again as I gain some experance that I have not used for years, that will take some time to get the rust out of my brains and hands, it has been over 20 years when I last worked with a Lathe at Brown & Sharp before they went on strick that long ago. Any help in finding one even if I have to replace the motor, so long as it has some of the working tools. Again thanks in advance for any help. Brian

For a lathe , I have been watching E-bay and also Craigs list. But to this point I have all but given up. I have been looking to spend 100 to 150 max and have not found one with all that I want for that price . So I will go at it another way. Even though there are other machinists here ,and they told me they would make me parts I still want to try my self and say I MADE IT.:thumb:

personally i dont think you'll EVER find a used lathe that works for under 5 bills...but then again...some granny out there has the perfect lathe her ...bless his soul husband ....left in the cellar and she'd be more than happy to give it to you...if you rake her yard.

So far I have been lucky, I have a new Dremel tool for small Items, and I have become prity handy using my belt sander upside down while spinning the rod into the size I need. Its not perfect but over all the first one came out pritty good and I put it in my Whisper. I just made another one for my CFX and it even came out better then the first one. I learned to leave it slightly larger so I can sand it back to it's smooth nees using 600 & 800 Grit paper, to put the finish to where it should be nice and smooth, and a nice fit to match. There is always a way to work around a problem. I also was able to get a sample of the Delrin .250 flat stock in black and on my 2nd try to cut out a part for the firing mecanisam. I already made one out of Air Craft grade Alumanum and want to see if I can do it with Delrin which will make it much lighter, and to fit my hand. As I said there is always a way around a problem.

The emotional repose did wonders -- thanks for the encouragement.

You are right -- it will take a whole lot more that a few asinine comments by a few asinine members to make me leave my online home!! :thumb:

as ready as I thought to return… I woke up this morning with the thought on my mind that the comments at the end of my post above were not helpful for either myself, or the forum, to move forward. So I want apologize to everyone, whether you were offended or not.

Diar, I’ve always read that a troll was someone who posted on forums just to start trouble, and what this guy did is spamming. You’ve been “foruming” (I just made that up) a whole lot longer than I have, what exactly is the difference?

Spammer- Poster that posts links to other sites.
Troll- Someone that posts in a thread for the purpose of eliciting negative reactions and not contributing to the topic.

Conclusion: Diar used wrong context.

I did make it sound like I was quoting you, didn't I? :frusty: :sorry:

:attention: Everyone,

Although causing grief for diarmadhim does have a certain appeal, the fact is that the composition of the regrettable post above is strictly that of WestTexas FarmBoy -- who sincerely wishes that he had waited a few more days before logging back onto AirgunOne.

Thanks for the clarification RR. :thumb:
