back in 82 i was living in Mabelton Georgia working for a 9 man shop..fresh from the dairy farm from NY.
new years eve day we worked and by lunch it started snowing.the shop was down in a steep valley.one road was all there was..and steep too.5 oclock came and we already had a few belts under us.:) shop party you know the deal.lol my wife flew home the day before and i was to follow after work.yeah right fly this day...we couldnt even get up the hill.seems almost everyone that lived down in the valley tried to get out for the festivities. there was cars and trucks stuck all up and down that only road..looked like a demolishion derby.
i had a VW dunebug thingie and it went right thru all that mess.called the wife "i'll be late" ( back when you could just jump on an airplane for 50 bucks)...went home packed and started twards ATL airport....then it hit me...my buddys was stuck in that hole down there.did a power brake turn..and went back...not before i stopped at the grub and liquor store..what a sorry site i sore when i pryed the door open...a bunch of hillbillies cold and hungry and NO booze..
now let me tell you about these guys..im from NY..so im the freak..the outcast...until this magical time.
i showed up with 5 bags of porkrinds...6 bottles of cheap whiskey...and DAMN the smiles i saw.
instant raise from Roy the foreman..nomore shit from "bully" (real name unknown) the headhunter (who later took me under his wing..and took me fishing)..
3 younger than i was welders..believe it...all sir names..mark..all got a job the same day...very nice pack of reds...DONT fook with one or you'll deal with all three...nice chaps....and then theres ole Slim.
he lived in a back room at some church...you could find him every sunday morn...4AM sweeping the church lot...needbe or not...he swept.
6'6 and maybe 150 LBS..but a stand up fella...wore the blue long sleeve work suit...buttoned up to the neck proper...
and Jamie..the vet from Nam..had no legs..just metal thinging...and could walk like any other...very quiet..until this nite...he told me all his sorry and pain..it must have been hell to be him back in Nam.
we bonded that nite..but the next day he was the same quiet fella...holding the deep inside. one hard working MFer he was/is.
next is Jimmy..WOW what a powerhouse..and a pure mountainman...another quiet man.
i always saw him as a problem child..never spoke only worked...he was THE heavy metal man when it came to welding...he lived and took breath from it...by the second bootle of cheap...for some reason he wanted to kick my yankee ass...he was all up and ready...im like 150 LBS his weight...im boozin...i say go for it BIGGIN...the shop gets silent...antisapation and shit...he raches over and grabs me..and plants a big hug..damn near takes my breath away.i learned the easy way..that day..what people really mean from the heart.
SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.
in 1982.i spent my nite with some great fellas...back in them ther hills.
i hope you all have a great new year...and remember.whats real.:moon:
