View Full Version : Benjamin Discovery - Arrival
I received my anticipated brown truck delivery about 30 minutes ago. Everything arrived in great shape; there was no exterior box damage with the exeption of the factory box itself. The bolt handle had poked a hole in the box and was slightly bent. That was a simple fix, and nothing else seemed out of place.
The finish is nice and the wood is even nicer than I expected (compared to many stories from others about their out of box discos). Instead of filling her right away, I decided to pull her apart to make sure everything was where it should be. I'm glad I did.
The very tiny hex head screw that holds the steel breech onto the air tube was VERY loose. I could see this alone causing many "my disco won't group for shit" issues right off the bat. I removed the whole top assembly (very much like taking a 2260 apart), checked the transfer seal/port, gave the parts a good wipedown, secured the breech screw and checked to see if she sealed up nicely. Good to go.
I pumped 50 strokes (was so easy I could do it with one hand) then took a break and chatted with Mike on the phone a bit. 50 strokes had already brought her up to 1000 psi. I then pumped 25 more, which brought it to 1600, then another 25 after a short break taking care of work. Now she's at 1900, where I'll leave it for now and begin shooting. Pumping was much easier than I expected, but I only went to just below 2000. I figure it would probably get harded past that mark or close to 2500. Here's a few out of box pics. Range report and further updates coming soon...

Robin - it should be ready for this weekend, but I do need some high scope mounts. My BSA 50mm scope won't fit that with the mediums I have, even when I remove the sight. I'm stuck with a crappy 4x32 that came with another rifle, but it'll have to do for now. I may just order a new scope just for this gun from natchezss or something.
Timmy - yep, I was surprised at the stock (I've seen some that looked like chinese mystery wood). This one's got a nice grain and finish. There's a little tiny natural crack from the grain at the back close to the pad, and it looks like someone at the factory smudged some filler on it. It's nothing to worry about though, nor enough reason to scrap the overall nice stock. I'm gonna give her a nice sanding and tru-oil it sometime soon, since there's barely a coat on it anyway (I can feel all the grains).
Thanks again for the info about the breech and I'm glad I checked it prior to shooting. I just scoped her - time for the range...
Splash 04-01-2009, 02:53 PM Sweet stock J. Unfortunately there's no turning back now, hehe. I'll let you know how the little pieces of nylon turn out.
I just pushed a couple dozen rounds through her and am getting used to it now. I've been starting my fills at 1900 psi and have found a slight fluctuation (very small) in poi until she settles down at around 1600-1700 psi. From there it's a bunch more shots at that level until it starts to go down a bit more. Here's my 20 yard test, 5 rounds each target. The first one (1) are the first 5 rounds at around 1900 psi. Number 2 shows the next 5 and then 3 shows the last bunch of rounds. From a 1900 psi start, I noticed a consistent 10-12 shots before she settles in.
The noise doesn't bother me - IMO, it's not that loud at all. But then again I shoot indoors most of the time. The trigger sucks but this isn't a surprise since I've read a lot this rifle's trigger issues before purchasing it. It's very mushy and has a tough single stage pull with no predictability. The fix is simple though. I'll probably do a 3-screw trigger mod and re-finish/coat the stock sometime soon.
Damn guys - this thing is the SHIZZZNIT! I caught myself grabbing the barrel a few times since I'm so used to breakbarrels. I'm gonna go take a break now - my nipples are still hard over all the excitement... :banana075:
PS - Right now I'm shooting the cheap Walmart crosman hollow points. I'm going to see how well these pellets do as I push them out further; but I do have a bunch of heavies here as well for later and farther...
Hey Tim - how's that copper tubing secured to your barrel? You using a set screw?
timmyj1959 04-01-2009, 04:17 PM Phone was dead & is charging. The copper is epoxyed on,,, I honed it for a snug fit. As I said the other day,,, the "Law" clearly states: "Perminatly Attached in such a manner that attempts at removing said device will destroy the device ". (Not a direct quote of the Law,,, but close) I have built several such "muzzle breaks",,,,, every time I tried to remove one to update/chop a brl. ect,, they come off in pieces. That is why I have made most of mine with PVC & wood. A "mutual" Friend of ours is spinnin me up some parts for a shroud for one of my latest XX projects,, even though I will now have some first class precision aluminum "parts",,, I have come up with a few Ideas that will make it virtually imposible to remove my new shroud!!:thumb: I will soon have the latest Laws about this subject in hand,, I will share this info here as soon as I get it. Just listened to your message Jon,,,,,,, you are hopelessly lost to the "Dark Side" now,,,,,,,, I just knew this was gonna happen!!! Enjoy my Friend,,,, talk to Ya soon!! Tim.
Dark side? I found it to be brighter for me. So bright, that I just
sold my last springer last week. Now I'm exclusively PCP and SSP
for all of my pest control.
Yes the dark side is very powerful. You can not resist the power of the dark side; therefore, to immerse yourself fully into its power, you must free yourself of all other air guns and ship them to me at once. You must obey.
Jon, BTW, when you tire of your new toy, give me a call.:p
Sorry, It's already done. Just trying to raise some scratch for an FWB 603.
It's going to take the place of the B26-2 that I just sold as my main pigeon gun.
Very accurate with no holes in the sheet steel roof.
peicemakerss22 04-02-2009, 01:36 PM i want one!!!!!! jon, perhaps a short guide for fixing the crappy trigger might be in order... im really starting to think i might go PCP on my next gun purchase... the 'dark side' does indeed have quite a pull...

My trigger packs is currently apart and a guide is in the works as I type. Mcmaster should be delivering the rest of the stuff I need by tomorrow and I should have a guide up by the weekend. It's super easy...
When I was polishing up the trigger parts I noticed that the trigger link is slightly bent and cracked right at the holes. Looks like it may have happened when it was punched out at the factory. It still works, but it's cracked enough to worry about eventual failure. I'm gonna have to find some steel I can make another one out of. I figure it'll be easier making one than ordering it and having to wait weeks. Out comes the dremel...
Splash 04-02-2009, 04:01 PM Ouch.:( I know someone that has a mill, but they recently had back surgery so you'd have to operate it.
No worries buddy - I'm gonna go to work on one with my dremel. It shouldn't take too long...
Splash 04-02-2009, 04:11 PM OK you know where it's at when needed.
Are you going to case harden it?
Probably not. It's not under any kind of extreme load/pressure.
I found a cover plate for an electrical box that was pretty close in thickness to the part. I just got through cutting the outline with a hacksaw. Time to break out that dremel...
Altogether it took about 45 minutes to make. I started with a rectangle and drilled a hole. I then slid the pin in the hole and the old link on top and clamped it down to trace the outline. I took a hacksaw and cut along the lines (post above this), then used a dremel and files to clean it up. Voila!
peicemakerss22 04-03-2009, 01:13 PM well done, man... lets hope it works well..
I just got done doing the 3-screw mod and fired a few test shots. Boy is she smoother than ever now. The trigger has a very nice 2-stage feel now, with a crisp 2nd stage break. The home-made trigger link is working as it should too.
I sanded and re-coated the stock earlier today. I'm just waiting for it to dry before putting everything back together again...
super6 04-03-2009, 08:35 PM I've gotta stop reading this stuff...............
Update:
I've done a few more mods since my last post here and have documented them in the library.

Benjamin Discovery 3-Screw Trigger Mod:
http://www.airgunone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=976
The trigger now has a nice 2-stage "feel" from the mod. The 2nd stage breaks nice and crips and now has a predictable letoff, unlike the way it was prior to the mod. I also polished the engagement faces and the hammer/striker. The striker was pretty rough around the edges and needed a good polishing.
I also took the hammer spring from a 1377 and cut a few coils (about 2) off. It still packs a punch, especially for the sub 30 yards I usually shoot (enough to go through beer bottle caps at 30), but now I'm getting about 40 shots from 1700 psi to about 900. 1650-1000 seems to be the sweet spot for her as far as groups go. The best part is that she does really well with the cheap walmart chps for the closer range shooting I usually do.
Splash 04-07-2009, 06:59 AM Sounds like you got her shootin real nice Jon.
I decided to try 30 and 40 yard shooting today. It didn't last too long since it's pretty windy but I'm surprised. Still using the cheapie chps, I can hold a 1/2" group at 30 yards. At 40 it opened up to about the size of a dime, with a few scattered shots I'm attributing to the wind. I'm surprised at how well they're grouping at that distance with the cheap hollow points, as I've never really had much luck with those past about 30 yards. I have a box of crosman heavies, but so far I haven't needed them. 40 is about as far as I shoot around here anyway so I think I'm good to go for now.
I just placed an order for some thumb screws, springs and other things. I'm going to make a power adjuster. I currently have it tuned down quite a bit (probably around 750fps), but want to have the option of bumping it up another one or two hundred or so in the event I decide to shoot farther and go heavier. I haven't shot any of my springers since I got this baby and it's by far my favorite rifle...for now...
Trick it out Jon. You know I’ll be waiting in the wings. That is if I don’t order a Mac 1 in the mean
time.
Splash 04-09-2009, 07:12 PM Come on over Gary, you know you want to.:moon:

Gary may have some "testing" to do this weekend. Will you be around on Sat Mike?
Still got some targets set up and plenty of drinks.
It better be something safer than water. Do you have any idea what fish do in that stuff? :p
Splash 04-27-2009, 11:36 AM I'll be here. Water are you kidding?
Hey Gary - how's Friday sound? Will you be around? The wife and I will be on the road most of the day running errands.

Jon, I should be home after 1:00 pm. If you are still in the area, give me a call around that time.
Sounds good. I can set it for like 3pm or something. Friday will be better than the weekend (may have to babysit)...

I just got one of these guns. I have the distinct feeling I'm scaring my neighbors. The rifle is quite loud and I want to add something like the silencer you made here. Do you have a description on how you made it, parts etc?
Thanks
Tom.
craigfperry 05-14-2009, 07:41 AM please pm Timmy for any more info.
thanks.
btw welcome to A/G1
